Using mulch and rock in your landscaping provides added protection to your landscaping beds, as well as a finishing touch. While curb appeal is usually a top priority in a homeowner's mind, there are greater benefits to using mulch and rock as part of your landscaping design than just the aesthetics.

We provide our customers with an array of options of both mulch and rock for their landscaping needs in the Alton, Godfrey, and Edwardsville area. The most common type of mulch installed in our area is native reground, cedar, and options of red, brown, or black dyed mulch. The most common type of rock installed is Iowa River Rock and Iron Mountain Trap.

We tend to have a split preference from our customers on rock and mulch. The final determination comes down to budget, personal preference, and maintenance of the material.

Benefits of landscaping mulch & rock.

While mulch and rock can be an aesthetically pleasing touch to your landscaping project, there is a multitude of benefits that your landscaping will thank you for, including:

  • Adds a layer of insulation to the soil, which protects it from both extreme hot and cold temperatures
  • Retains moisture in the soil, which promotes healthy plant growth
  • Assists in weed prevention in landscaping beds
  • Prevents soil from eroding and reduces spread of plant diseases

Installing mulch and rock the right way.

Typically mulch needs to be replaced yearly, while decorative rock and gravel need to be replaced bi-yearly. Mulch, while being a more cost-effective route compared to rock, can eventually cost more over time due to the need to replenish more often. When we install new mulch or rock into your landscaping beds, there are a couple of guidelines we follow, which are:

  • We install your mulch at 2-3 inches thick and rock at 2 inches. These are the ideal depths to ensure the benefits, especially weed prevention, are reaped.
  • We don't place mulch too close to the base of plants, trees, vegetables, or perennials. Placing mulch too close can cause moisture build-up which can lead to rot.

We can also deliver mulch for DIY projects!
